A new study released this week found that, despite all the concern over health care costs, the health of people with jobs is declining.

Well well well…what a shocker. It seems that the current recession is impacting more than American’s financial health – the physical health as well. From the article on Moneycentral (http://blogs.moneycentral.msn.com/smartspending/archive/2009/09/25/is-your-job-damaging-your-health.aspx) Americans are killing themselves burning the midnight oil. Check out the following facts:

28% of employees report that their overall health is “excellent,” down from 34% six years ago. Men’s overall health has declined more rapidly than women’s.

41% of employees report experiencing three or more indicators of stress sometimes, often or very often.

One in three employees experiences one or more symptoms of clinical depression.

One in five employees has trouble falling asleep and 31% awaken too early and have trouble falling back to sleep.

21% are receiving treatment for high blood pressure and 14% are being treated for high cholesterol.

Nearly half of U.S. employees (49%) have not engaged in regular physical exercise in the last 30 days.

Nearly two of three workers (62%) are overweight or obese.

One in four workers still smokes.

What does that mean to you? Time to push back a little. Ask for a more flexible schedule, and see if you finish the job tomorrow. You never know until you try. I’m sure your boss is feeling the same way, but doesn’t want to say anything. They’re human too, and probably would like to spend more time for their families as well. What do you think?

I was searching around on ITPub, China’s most notorious IT-related website, and wanted an easy way to search for their books. Every time I go there I have to login, then go home, then search, then scan the results for my book, ALL IN CHINESE. I don’t know if you’re like me but, I hate trying to make sense of 26,000 Chinese letters, so I came up with a quick and dirty plug-in for Firefox to search ITPub.net very quickly.

Screenshot:

When finished your search bar should look like this.

So after a bit of Googling and hacking, I found an easy way to add a custom search into your Firefox search bar (next to the url). I even ghetto-rigged a favicon inside of it, even though it does no justice to the normal ITPub.net favicon (I wasn’t able to extract this from their website, even though their HTML source code is ONLY 50% Chinese). Without further adieu, here are the steps necessary to make a custom Firefox search plugin for ITPub.net and begin finding your favorite IT-related books:

Navigate to the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins directory of your computer (assuming you are running Windows)

Copy and Paste ANY of the current search plugin files (.xml) and rename it to “itpub.xml”.

Open the newly created .xml file in Notepad (easiest) to prepare it for editing.

Delete everything inside of it (or read it, if you want to know what is going on). If you choose one like Google or Yahoo! (assuming you have both of them installed), you can also see how they do their type-ahead search feature based off the first few letters that you type in the search box.

Paste the exact code shown below, then save and close:

<SearchPlugin xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/2006/browser/search/">

Buffalo Bills had a great 2009 draft but still some holes remain.

Not only do I like to blog about technical or business topics, but also some of my personal favorites. My favorite football team is the Buffalo Bills. Seeing as I grew up in Western New York this shouldn’t come as a suprise. Last year’s disappointing finish after a strong 5-0 start required some heads to fall, which they did, as well as some fresh faces on the team. The Bills did all this and more by picking up 4 solid players on day 1, with 3 of them in the trenches. The Bills touched all of their needs on draft day excpet Linebacker, with this spot still in question. However, the Bills definitely got the attention of many top analysts, especially those at ESPN. From their draft website (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft09/insider/news/story?id=4102620&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fnfl%2fdraft09%2finsider%2fnews%2fstory%3fid%3d4102620):

Todd McShay, ESPN Analyst – “On paper, this is one of the best drafts of 2009. I would have liked to see them take an OT with one of their two first-round picks. Wood was a bit of a reach late in the first, but he and G Andrew Levitre will ultimately become starters and boost what was the weakest area of the team entering the draft. Buffalo’s second-biggest priority was to upgrade its pass rush, and that goal was accomplished by selecting Maybin, who is the best pure edge rusher in this class. Maybin will play in a rotation with Chris Kelsay and Aaron Schobel early on and will have time to get bigger and stronger. And watch out for TE Shawn Nelson, who could turn into a late-round steal.”

The overwhelming response around the league is that the Bills did a great job but did not get the Tackle they needed to replace Jason Peters, who, if could keep his mouth shut, would have been a great player for years with the Bills.

I found the coolest plugin today on LinkedIn, the site for professionals. It is a hook between LinkedIn’s profiles and WordPress blogs, just like the one you are reading now. My posts will now be readable directly from my LinkedIn Profile Page so there is the continuity between these two Social Network Websites. As most of my posts are all Business-related, users in LinkedIn will find them useful also to have a quick read and see what is being blogged about. I would imagine that Facebook/Twitter/etc. are coming up with similar plugins. I will also try to keep cross-linking between the two sites, to show all those how to gain more traffic to your homepages.

For example: Please check out my blog at TonyDiLoreto.com
